Not the facts. Not the credentials. The relationship — between knowing and doing, between understanding and excellence, between the examined life and the one we’re actually living.
Robert Pirsig saw it. Riding across America, wrenching on a motorcycle, he understood that Quality isn’t a property of things — it’s the knife-edge where subject meets object, where attention becomes care and care becomes mastery. You can’t bolt it on afterward. It has to be there from the start.
W. Edwards Deming saw it too, from a different angle. A system, he said, is only as good as its understanding of itself. His System of Profound Knowledge — appreciation for a system, understanding of variation, a theory of knowledge, and psychology — wasn’t a management framework. It was a map of how human beings actually improve things. Together. Over time. With honesty about what they don’t yet know.
And Tom Peters? Peters saw that excellence isn’t reserved for the Fortune 500 or the ivory tower. It erupts in garages, in small teams, in organizations crazy enough to believe that caring about what you do is a competitive advantage. Passionate. Restless. Relentlessly hopeful.
The Chautauqua tradition
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chautauqua gatherings drew millions of Americans to tents and lakesides and town squares — not for entertainment, but for learning. Science. Philosophy. Music. Politics. Practical skills. All of it mixed together, the way real life mixes it. Theodore Roosevelt called it “the most American thing in America.”
It died — or went quiet — when we decided that learning had to be credentialed, specialized, and serious to count.
It’s time to bring it back.
What we’re doing here
Quality Chautauqua is a learning community built on a simple, radical idea:
Our topics are short and varied by design. A session on systems thinking. A look at the philosophy of craft. The history of an idea. The mechanics of a motorcycle. The psychology of a well-run team. How a garden grows. How a culture changes. How quality — real quality, the kind Pirsig meant — shows up or fails to show up in the things we make, the institutions we build, and the lives we lead.
No single thread. No required sequence. Come for one, stay for many, bring what you know and leave with more questions than you arrived with.
That’s the Chautauqua way.

The philosophical interludes woven through Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance weren’t lectures. They were invitations to think alongside him. To hold a wrench and a question at the same time. To resist the separation of the technical and the beautiful, the practical and the profound.
We’re doing the same thing here, just with more voices and more chairs around the fire.

Come curious. Come skeptical. Come with your expertise and your beginner’s mind. The only prerequisite is that you give a damn about getting things right — and that you understand, as Deming did, that getting things right is never finished.
Quality is not a destination.
